"But I Didn't Do It"

Written by Robert E. Bailes

Dealing With Injustice

As children we were all misunderstood at times or found ourselves in positions where we were accused of something that we didn't have anything to do with. It seemed as though in my home, having five siblings, that there were so many different personalities that someone was getting in trouble for something every day. If the one who was guilty didn't confess then we all had to suffer the punishment. I remember feeling the disappointment of what seemed to be injustice and disappointment. I didn't deserve the time of confinement or missing an activity that I had so looked forward to doing. It was so hard to accept that I shared the responsibility for something I knew nothing about, but no one admitted to doing it and therefore we all had to experience the punishment.

Sometimes this happened in school as well, when some of the class would get too loud and everyone lost their privilege to work together for the remainder of class. I'm sure you all have a story to tell about how you suffered the consequences for something that you didn't do. Do you think that Jesus knows anything about this type of behavior and treatment? Does He know how it feels to be mistreated by a friend?

Let's read chapter twenty-six and verses fifty-nine through sixty-five of Matthew,

Mat 26:59-65 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, 61 And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 62 And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? 63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

It was for us that Jesus suffered the injustice when He was taken before the High Priest! He did tell them the truth! They did not believe that He was the Son of God! You see, He understands our hurts and He has been there too! He knows how it feels to take the punishment for someone else; yes, for your sins and mine!

It is at the cross that we find the ultimate act of God that alone will bring healing to the hurts of life. We may have experienced things that we have carried with us every day into our adult lives or even into the way that we parent our own children.

Until we turn the hurts of life over to the Son of God who knows our pain and our disappointments, we cannot heal those little holes that are left each time we felt hurt or misjudged by others. We must lay them at the foot of the cross where Jesus laid all of His suffering when He gave His life for our freedom and forgiveness! It is following this forgiveness that Jesus forgot our wrongs and God can forgive His children as they repent of their sins.

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

We also must forgive in order to experience NEW LIFE in Christ from this day forward.

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

I encourage you to talk a few minutes right now. Think about the times when you were falsely accused or misjudged by someone who you loved and cared about.

Even if you can only do it for your own healing today, I encourage you to forgive those who you remember and Jesus will heal the holes and replace those memories with a little more of His love that He alone can give.
